Water-based vs. solvent-based... the decision for all coating experts

At Andura we specialize in both water-based and solvent-based masonry coatings, which means that we can cater to year-round application if necessary.

When it comes to coating during the winter it is often not advised due to the unpredictable weather and colder temperatures. However, using solvent-based coatings can help prevent delays and unwanted problems once the product has been applied. If applied in accordance with our guidelines our solvent-based products can be applied all year round making the once-seasonal job not so seasonal.

The application can vary between solvent and water-based products however it's often advised to move from solvent to water-based at the end of February or early March when the spring starts, and the weather becomes more consistent. However, if you are familiar with the UK weather you know that can be a myth.

Here is a breakdown of our water-based Vs solvent-based products

Solvent-based

Water-based

Pro-Clear Ultimate

ClearGard

AnduraTex

TMC Trowel and Roll

Classic Smooth

Pro-Flex

RoofGard

Block-Seal

Water-based coatings are overall safer to use and are not nearly as harmful for humans nowadays, however, with the development of more effective water-based products, there's often a small difference between water-based and solvent-based in terms of final results. Historically solvent-based were known to be more durable and long-lasting as solvent-based adhesives form bonds when the solvents inside evaporate making them more resistant. Technological advances however have improved the durability and resilience of water-based products making them as good as solvent-based. Like anything though, choosing between solvent-based or water-based is a preference for everyone as people prioritise different features of a product more than others.
